Full moon night in Manasarovar Lake on 30 May 2018 (Purnima)

The snow capped Mount Kailash situated in the China’s autonomous region of Tibet has age long religious and spiritual significance among Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpos. According to Hindus, Mount Kailash is the dwelling of supreme Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. So, Hindus regard it as one of the important pilgrimage destination. It is believed that one can attain ultimate salvation: ‘Mokshya’ from all the known and unknown sins ever committed in life completing the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Manasarovar Lake.

Mount Kailash is worshipped as “Jewel of Snow” by Tibetan people. This mountain is situated at an elevation of 6714 meters above the sea level with the total circumference of 53 km. The beginning spot of Mount Kailash is the ‘Yamadwar’ that is also called gate of heaven. Some pilgrims simply rotate Yamadwar and return back. It is believed that rotating Yamadwar provides equal merit as that of circumambulating mount Kailash.

Tibet has become a center of attraction from its touristic and religious point of view as it offers fabulous views of Monasteries, world’s tallest peaks, diverse Flora and fauna with the serene environment on the way to Kailash range. A single glance of this sacred mountain Kailash is believed to be the symbol of good luck for rest of the life. Manasarovar Lake: Another important pilgrimage destination at Kailash region is the holy lake Mansarovar. The meaning of this lake in Sanskrit Language is Lake of Consciousness. Lord Buddha is believed to have meditated on the bank of river and obtained Enlightenment. So, this lake is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge for Buddhist people. In the similar way, Hindu people worship this Lake as a bathing pond of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is said that one can really see Shiva and Parvati bathing in the pond during some especial full moon night. The sacred Mount Kailash is at the North of this lake whereas to the West of it is Lake ‘Rakshastal’ (Devils lake). According to Hindu scriptures, one who drinks water from the lake will go to the abode of Shiva after the end of life. Rotating the lake one to three times is believed to cleanse off all the sins committed ever in a life time. In order to attain “Moksha”, the ultimate salvation in life, one has to reach at least the precinct of the Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake. With the hope of cleansing their soul and mind devotees come to visit mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake paying deep respect to gods and goddess. Oxygen is less at higher altitudes. The inclement weather and high altitude induces certain illness generally not encountered over the plains. Headache, nausea, lassitude, lethargy, breathlessness, general uneasiness [malaise], high irritability, light loss of balance, disorientation, incoherence and insomnia are a few. It is common to all irrespective of the age, sex and physical fitness. Gradual acclimatization is the best answer. Tranquilizers, sleeping dose and strong anti-biotic must be avoided. Some of symptoms indicate that the body mechanism is readjusting to new environments. The best idea is deliberately slow down all the activities and follows the following rules:

Chant a prayer or visualize everything around to suit your pleasant thoughts or put on the earphones and listen to your favorite music, Bhajans, Shiva Mantra chanting etc.
