In the present day Zenda Country, there is an old kingdom, Guge. It was once a sovereign estate which later disrupted after the civil revolt and the invasion of the allied armies of eight foreign countries. The civil combat and foreign attacks disturbed the whole kingdom. The remaining of this kingdom still has much to learn about the history of this legendary kingdom. Researchers are still researching about this legendary kingdom.
The heir of a nearby collapsed Kingdom endowed Guge kingdom which was established in about 10th century. For over 700 years, it was ruled by 16 kings with thousands of soldiers. But, the power disputes brought conflict within the imperial family resulting anxiety and disorder in the society and induced civil revolt in 1660s. The brother of the king asked the ruler of Ladakh (the present Kashmir), the neighboring country to help him to get victory over the disordered state and became successful as well. Guge Kingdom played an important role in an economic and cultural development of Tibet during its existence. Buddhism and its version blossom from Guge into the heart of Tibet. It was also the center of Tibet's foreign trade.
There are Over 400 rooms and 800 caves here with some fortresses, secret paths, pagodas, arm storerooms, granaries and all kinds of burial places at Guge kingdom in present time. Explorers have been researching for more at this place. Rooms of this kingdom are no more than debris while walls can be seen except for some temples. A big city wall surrounds the ruins and a fortress marks each of the corners. Ancient Palaces, temples and local residences expand from the top to the bottom and only secret hidden can take us to its top, an outline designed to indicate supremacy of kings and to ensure the protection and safety of the palaces. The Ruins of Guge Kingdom have been recorded under the first group of Cultural Relics of National Importance under the Protection of the State because of its historical and cultural significance.
There are many interesting heritages of the ruins. The White Temple, Red Temple, Samsara Temple, Imperial Palace, and Assembly Palace are some of them. Among many imprints, statues and murals, complete and most valuable artifacts remaining are mainly the pictures of Shakyamuni, the king, queen, prince and other royal servants. Besides that, pictures of the cultivation of male and female mysterious Buddha’s are other important assets. Colors and lines of the murals are similar to those of the Mogao caves in Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. Mostly the golden and silver Buddhist idols can be seen here.
