The epic legend says that King Janak unearthed Sita from a furrow in a field here, thereby making her the daughter of Bhumi, the earth goddess. As part of the temple grounds is the Wedding (Bivah) Mandap, where Lord Rama and Goddess Sita were united in marriage after Rama famously snapped a divine Shiva Dhanush (bow). Through continuous religious chants and daily pujas, generations of devotees have kept the site's spiritual energy alive. Traditional fairs and devotional songs fill the entire district during this seasonal celebration of Lord Rama's birth. King Janak named Mithila kingdom after himself in the Ramayana. A man found a baby girl and reported it to him.

As King Janak loved Sita, many people started calling her Janaki, as she was close to his heart. King Janak adopted Sita and raised her. As part of this deal, King Janak also said that whoever strung Shiva's bow (unstring able) would marry her. There were several kings who tried to string the bow but failed, but lord Ram, prince of Ayodhya, succeeded. Dham is where Sita was born in memory of the holy relationship between Lord Ram and Goddess Sita Janakpur.

It is a birth place of goddess Sita and Lord Ram-Sita got married at this sacred place. An Indian queen has spent nine hundred thousand (9 Lakhs) to build this temple so it is also called Nau Lakhe Mandir.

According to the mythological story, there was a divine bow of Shiva but no one could string the bow. Once Sita easily lifts that bow then king Janak realized that Sita is not an ordinary human and announced she should wed by whoever was able to string the divine bow of Shiva. Though many suitors tried no one could succeed so King became depressed. At that time, son of the King of Ayodhya, Ramchandra came to lift the bow. At first no one trusts that he could lift it up but he alone lifts the bow and it suddenly broke into 3 pieces. First piece flew over, the second piece penetrated into land and the third piece fell into Dhanusa spot which is even worshipped today as Dhanusha Dham (Pilgrimage). That place is still believed to be there at the middle of Dhanu Sagar.

King Janak became very happy and organized a big marriage celebration of Ram and Sita. This is why we still celebrate Bibha Panchami festival in Magh Sukla Panchami. In this occasion, many pilgrims, tourists, priests, minks come to visit Janakpur. In this day, the idols of Ram and Sita are rotated around Janakpur city and people still participate in the occasion as member of marriage procession of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. Not only in Bibha Panchami, there is big fair in the festivals like, Ram Nawami, Holi. Ramaswami is celebrated on the auspicious occasion of birthday of Lord Ram. Dhanush Adham is 20 km far from Janaki Temple and pilgrims travel there by Jeep.
