Full moon in Manasarovar Lake on 31 August 2023 (Janai Purnima)

Mount Kailash of Tibet is a popular pilgrimage destination for the Hindu devotees as it is considered to be the sacred abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Holy Kailash Tour begins after worshipping Pashupatinath in Nepal. Then we move to Tibet and The Chhu Monastery nearby holy Manasarovar Lake is the first place where we reach in a full moon day and stay a night. We take bath in the sacred water of Lake Manasarovar On the next day early in the morning and return to the camp. Then we perform religious rituals with priest (Pujari) and take our day meal and proceed towards Darchen. Darchen is the final but extremely beautiful city in Kailash region which lies at the bottom of Mount Kailash from where the ultimate Kailash circumambulation of 53 kilo meters begins among which 38 kilo meters should be walked on foot and remaining can be traveled by bus, jeep or van. But our trip is only up to Dirapuk.

Dirapuk is our night stay spot and next day early in the morning we head to the bottom of Mount Kailash. It is extremely pleasurable to touch the bottom of Kailash Parvat as it is the form of Lord Shiva and its bottom is like of Shiva’s feet. Two hours of walking from Dirapuk expands our journey up to West-North bottom of Mount Kailash. There is a religious trend of performing rituals worshipping on the divine feet of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims also carry on these rituals by bowing their head down on the feet of Lord Shiva with great devotion offering pure milk. River Ganges has been formed from the Shiva's Jattas (Hair) and the water that flows from the snowy tip of Kailash Parvat is river Ganges as per several Hindu religious books. We can see the Ganges like river flowing from the West-North side bottom of Mount Kailash where the offered milk gets mixed so people believe that crossing this river is committing sins. That’s why Kailash circumambulation terminates at this place. Visitors usually return to Darchen from here. On the way to Kailash Yam Dwar (Gate of Heaven) can be seen where pilgrims worship and circumambulate it as well. This tour does not include a complete Kailash circumambulation as it is only up to Dirapuk from Kathmandu with a direct return back.
